Case Study 1. Specification (On-line or Printed)

Requirement

To edit and reformat existing specification document (200 pages of text & illustrations) for use by suppliers of technical manuals, to ensure consistency of style & content.

The specification must be usable both on-line (on-screen) and as a printed, bound volume.

Result must conform to existing house style.

Method

  1. Text is formatted in Microsoft Word

  2. Illustrations are created in preferred illustration software

  3. Illustrations are placed in Word text and sized, as appropriate.

  4. Automatic Tables of Contents/Cross-references etc. are installed.

  5. Word document is post-processed to PDF format for distribution

About PDF Files

PDF (or Portable Document Format) is an industry standard document format. PDF files can contain text and graphics (technical, photos etc.) and they can be read on a wide range of computers.

The PDF format is particuarly suited to highly detailed applications (e.g. containing technical or other complex illustrations) when zooming in to retrieve detail is important. PDF also allows faithful retention of format when documents are printed to paper.
